Where We Live: Aurora/East Aurora

Principal of East Aurora Middle School Mark Mambretti has begun a new effort to reach out to parents by posting news on Facebook, inspired in part by conversations he had with principals from around the country in Washington, D.C. last month.

Facebook is “where most of our parents are,” said Mambretti.

He joined 100 of the nation’s award-winning principals for the “National Principals Institute and Awards Gala” because he was named “New York Middle Level Principal of the Year” by the state School Administrators Association.

One of the best parts of the honor was meeting so many principals from so many schools, he said. “It was just a great affirmation of how many, many people in very different situations are doing their best to make kids be successful.”

Mambretti, in his sixth year as principal, said he has worked to take advantage of his school’s small size to create a family environment. “We’re not a big, educational factory,” he said.

Also this week:

• The East Aurora Village Board meets at 7 p.m. Monday at Village Hall, 571 Main St.

• The Aurora Town Board meets at 7 p.m. Monday at the Southside Municipal Center Auditorium, 300 Gleed Avenue.

While board meetings are usually held the second and fourth Mondays of the month, this meeting was moved up a week because of next Monday’s Columbus Day holiday and the budget planning schedule.

• Vote on the proposed $7.8 million capital school facilities project – for improvements like pool renovations and sidewalk repair – Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Middle School, 430 Main St. “It’s necessary infrastructure and safety upgrades,” said Mambretti.

• The School Board meets 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Middle School library, 430 Main Street.
