The Elma Town Board on Wednesday entertained project suggestions for use of a possible community block grant, including an addition to the Historical Societyâ€™s barn and a request from the new Elma Betterment Group to move the septic system at the Senior Center to make way for a covered drive.
Marlene Baumgartner, president of the Historical Society, said the organization needs the barn addition to store implements dating to the 1800s and to accommodate dairy exhibits and Jamison and Elma Post Office displays. Baumgartner noted that the project cost is estimated at $29,000 and that the Historical Society would hold fundraisers.
Gary Brooks, chairman of the Elma Betterment Group, said the covered drive is being requested so senior citizens wonâ€™t have to walk so far in icy and snowy weather. By moving the current septic system from the front of the building to the side would give the organization an additional 30 to 40 handicapped parking slots, as well as a covered drive with a heated base.
Brooks offered no cost estimate for the project. Councilman Michael Nolan noted assisted-living and rehabilitation facilities typically have roofs over their drop-off areas.
Supervisor Dennis Powers noted the the town plans to jointly resubmit a request for a Rural Transit van for the elderly, along with the towns of Aurora, Wales and Marilla. He noted the town also would consider the other two requests. The block grant money is available to a consortium of 33 towns, and a panel choses who meets the criteria.

â€˘ Water Superintendent Eugene Stevenson announced Triton Valley Mobile Home Park owner William Pfeil has met the Oct. 1 deadline for the installation of a backflow preventer. Stevenson called this a major accomplishment, after the town had pushed for the equipment for several years. Last month, town officials had voted to install the device and bill Pfeil if he failed to install it.
â€˘ The board voted to rescind a business-use permit for a restaurant, 16 South, which has been sold, and approved a business-use permit for the new owner at the same site, 16 South Fire Grill & Lounge, dependent upon the repair of emergency lighting. Officals noted the owners expect to open the restaurant, at 1600 Seneca St., before obtaining a liquor license.
