Galleria shoplifter gets swift justice

Justice was swift – less than a week between arrest and sentencing – for a Buffalo man who stole three coats late last month from Macy’s in the Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga.

Alphonso Haslip, 46, of Hazelwood Avenue, was sentenced Wednesday by Town Justice Paul Piotrowski to six months in jail. According to a police department spokesman, Haslip had pleaded guilty to petit larceny in connection with the Sept. 27 theft of three coats, valued at $597, which he concealed in a shopping bag before leaving the store.

Police said that almost two years ago, Macy’s management ordered Haslip, in writing, not to return to the store, threatening that he would be charged with trespass if he did. His return and theft last week amounted to burglary, police said; Officers Chris Wachowiak and Chris Lovallo charged him with burglary and petit larceny.

The judge cited Haslip’s extensive criminal history during a 25-year period in sentencing him to jail.
