Catherine Parker’s California paintings on view in Williamsville

Many local fans of the watercolorist Catherine Parker, who died last year after a long and successful painting career, are familiar with her shimmering streetscapes and backyard scenes that probe the hidden beauty of everyday experiences. But they may not be familiar with the work she painted while living in the Southwest, before returning to her native Western New York in the early 1980s.

“Catherine Parker: California,” a new exhibition featuring little-seen works from the middle of Parker’s career, opened Wednesday in Muleskinner Antiques (5548 Main St., Williamsville) and runs through Oct. 26. The exhibition, curated by Dean Brownrout, includes paintings from the period when she lived in California in the ’70s.

“The artworks in this show present an artist and woman of the 1970s, seeking to establish her identity. After a lifetime of living with the Burchfield and Parker names, we see her redefining herself in a new geography. Many of the paintings from the California period are simply signed ‘Catherine.’ ”
