Barbara N. Knauer, nurse, former Schofield director

Barbara N. Knauer, a nurse, former director at the Schofield Residence in Kenmore and retired lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, died Tuesday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, of breast cancer. She was 77.

Born Barbara Nee in Norfolk, Va., she earned her nursing degree at Deaconess Hospital and a master’s degree in business administration from the University at Buffalo.

A registered nurse and Williamsville resident, she worked as a supervisor in the Erie County Health Department and then developed and served as director of Schofield’s Long Term Home Health Care Program.

She retired from Schofield in 2001.

Mrs. Knauer served at the Army Reserve 865th Combat Support Hospital in Niagara Falls. She retired as a lieutenant colonel after 20 years of service in the Reserve.

She received the 1989 Nursing Service Administration Award from the New York State Nurses Association and the 1991 Ruth T. McGrorey Award from the Professional Nurses Association of Western New York.

She was president of the Professional Nurses Association, District 1; a member of the New York State Nurses Association; and treasurer of the Western New York chapter of Nurses House Inc.

Survivors include a son, Thomas; a daughter, Carol; and two sisters, Natalie Mann and Linda Nee.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Calvary Episcopal Church, 20 Milton St., Williamsville.
