Man fatally shot on Riley Street

A man believed to be in his 30s was shot and killed Tuesday night on Riley Street, Michael DeGeorge, Buffalo Police Department spokesman, said Wednesday.

Officers responding to the reports of a shooting just before 10:30 p.m. discovered the body of an unidentified man inside 699 Riley, according to police reports.

Homicide detectives, who have not released the victim’s name, are continuing to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to call or text 847-2255 or contact the department through its website,

All tips will remain confidential, DeGeorge said.

The Riley-Fillmore Avenue neighborhood was described by one former resident as a scene of frequent criminal activity.

“There is a lot going on there,” said the woman, who moved from the neighborhood because of the crime. “It wasn’t the worst street, but I’m glad I’m out.”

The woman, who asked that her name be withheld, described a block of vacant fields and unsupervised teen parties. One house in particular, she said, was visited by police “almost every other day.”

In January a 29-year-old man was hospitalized after he was shot at Fillmore and Riley, according to police reports.

And on the evening of Dec. 6, 2012, the same corner was the scene of a freak accident that resulted in the death of a 54-year-old woman.

Ida Murphy, a church-going woman on her way to the store for some juice, was killed when she was struck by a light pole. The pole was one of three toppled when struck by a vehicle being pursued by police.

The driver of the vehicle – Isaac C. Parker, 48, of Briscoe Avenue – had been mortally shot moments before by police who had tried to stop him on suspicion of drunken driving.
