High School Extra: Flames win again

Flames win again

Williamsville East’s boys soccer team already had a 4-1 win over Williamsville South last week. The Billies tried again on Tuesday and came a little closer, but still couldn’t knock off the area’s No. 1-ranked large school team.

The Flames notched a 2-1 victory over the sixth-ranked Billies.

“They played great,” coach Jeff Librock of Williamsville East said of South. “It was a classic game, another classic South-East game. South is a very good team. They were ready for us.”

Dan Griffin had the game-winning goal for the Flames, hitting the corner from about 20 yards away. The other goal came from a substitute, Abdul Alshaebi. Williamsville East is 11-0, 5-0 in ECIC II and ranked first in the state.

Meanwhile, No. 2 Clarence used a balanced attack in a 4-1 win over Orchard Park. Patrick Schulz had a goal and an assist for the Red Devils, who improved to 7-1.

East wins rivalry swim

There’s nothing like a good matchup between cross-town rivals, and that was the case when Williamsville East edged Williamsville North, 55-47, in girls swimming.

“They are all good friends,” East coach Mike Doefler said about the swimmers on both sides. “It was a good match in a lot of aspects.”

The meet’s only double winner was Brooke Pettis of East (3-2). She’s continuing a fine season to date.

“She’s already qualified for states in the 100 fly,” Doefler said. “That really takes the pressure off from doing it at the end of the year.”

WSW just good enough

Third-ranked West Seneca West swept three games from No. 8 Frontier, but that doesn’t mean the boys volleyball win was easy.

The Indians improved to 8-2, 7-0 in ECIC I, with a 25-23, 27-25, 25-22 win. Junior Dennis Ulmer had nine kills.
