Silver Creek trucker injured in late-night Thruway crash

PORTLAND – A trucker from Silver Creek suffered head injuries after his rig, carrying propane tanks, swerved off the Thruway and down a 100-foot embankment in Chautauqua County late Wednesday, Thruway State Police reported.

Richard R. Kingsley, 57, of Dennison Road, was driving west on the Thruway at about 11:10 p.m. when he veered to the right in a construction zone in the Town of Portland, police said. The rig went through the guiderail and down a steep embankment, landing on the passenger side and trapping Kingsley inside.

Kingsley was disoriented when police arrived. He was airlifted to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa., where he was listed in fair condition, according to police.

Chautauqua County’s Hazardous Materials Team responded, but found no leaks from the propane tanks, police said. The Fredonia Fire Department and ambulance, as well as State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit and the Thruway Traffic Safety Officer also responded.

Westbound traffic was diverted off the Thruway at Dunkirk for almost three hours.
