CEPA gallery displays ‘The Art of Sport’

What does fine art have to do with sports?

Viewed up close, the idea that a Bills game might have anything in common with what’s hanging on the walls of the Albright-Knox, for instance, probably seems absurd to many.

But zoom out a little, as a new CEPA Gallery show “The Art of Sport” is asking us to do, and you see that sports and art are really just slight variations on the same theme, each with something important to say about the other. Both are about competition, drama, performance, about following and deviating from proscribed rules and about the individual personalities and talents that play out on the canvas or on the field.

The exhibition, which opens Friday in CEPA (617 Main St.) and Big Orbit Gallery (30D Essex St.) was organized by the artist Craig Smith. It includes work by more than a dozen internationally recognized artists, including the acclaimed conceptual artist John Baldessari and the photographer Cathy Opie, who spoke in Buffalo on Monday.

The show opens with a reception in CEPA Gallery at 7 p.m. Friday. An event featuring interactive art by Mitch Miller is slated for 8 p.m. Saturday in Big Orbit Gallery, with more events scheduled for the remainder of the show’s run through Nov. 23.
