BPO Rocks with the music of Queen, free outdoor concert

It’s a busy weekend for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

“BPO Rocks” is the result of a unique collaboration between the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Windborne Music. The season rocks forward at 8 p.m. Saturday in Kleinhans Music Hall with the Music of Queen and rolls on into the spring, ending April 25 with Lou Gramm, known as the voice of Foreigner.

Three of the concerts are masterminded by Brent Havens. Havens, the maestro behind the Music of Led Zeppelin, which has been a big seller for the BPO in the past, is presiding over the Queen and Lou Gramm concerts, as well as a concert Nov. 8 devoted to the Music of the Rolling Stones.

In what appears to be a fall first, the BPO presents a free concert at 1 p.m. Sunday at the new River Fest Park (249 Ohio St.), affectionately known as Peg’s Park, to toast the Old First Ward. The afternoon begins with a talk by Tim Bohen, author of “Against the Grain – The History of Buffalo’s First Ward.” A quartet of BPO musicians led by Associate Concertmaster Amy Glidden will then play a set of Irish tunes and traditional classics. Finally, brace yourself for the BPO’s brass and percussion, led by Matthew Kraemer.
