16-year-old Indian rhino pregnant after procedure

Tashi, 16, one of two Indian rhinoceroses at the Buffalo Zoo, is pregnant.

The rhino was impregnated in an experimental artificial insemination procedure, making the Buffalo Zoo one of the first in the world to have a successful Indian rhino pregnancy this way.

A team of keepers and veterinarians from the zoo worked with Dr. Monica Stoops from the Center of Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife, based at the Cincinnati Zoo, to help with the procedure.

Tashi is expected to give birth to her third offspring in June 2014.

Baby rhinos stay with their mothers for two to four years, at which time she would likely move to another zoo, according to zoo spokeswoman Rachel Gottlieb.
