Nutritious food costs more than junk food

First lady Michelle Obama’s condemnation of fast food forgets one point – namely, many people cannot afford the cost of nutritious food. Stephen Dubner, co-author of “Freakonomics,” investigated the double cheeseburger at McDonald’s and discovered that it delivers more calories per dollar than most of the competition.

It has been reported that junk food costs as little as $1.76 per 1,000 calories, whereas fresh vegetables and the like cost more than 10 times as much. Sure, the well-to-do can frequent the farmers’ market, but what about the poor and hungry?
