Richard P. Rand, retired insurance agency executive

Richard P. Rand, a retired insurance agency executive, died Aug. 27 in his Depew home. He was 87.

Born in Bradford, Pa., he attended St. Bernard’s Elementary School, Bradford Area High School and Lehigh University, where he competed on the swimming and diving teams.

He served in the Army as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division and was a diver for the Army while he was stationed in Japan.

Returning from service, he attended St. Bonaventure University and majored in finance. In 1948, he took ownership of his family’s insurance business, the Costello Rand Agency in Bradford. He continued his career in insurance when he moved to Meadville, Pa., in 1964. Five years later, he accepted a position as brokerage supervisor with Aetna Life Insurance Co. and moved to Amherst.

In 1984, he became one of the founders of Northeast Agencies, which became one of the largest agencies in Western New York. He retired in 2003.

Mr. Rand received numerous certifications and awards, including Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant.

He was a past president of the Buffalo Chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters and the Insurance Club of Buffalo.

He also instructed classes in estate planning, business insurance, pensions, law and insurance mathematics.

In retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively. An avid reader, he also enjoyed swimming, diving, skiing and photography. Until two years ago, he swam half a mile a day. He also enjoyed performing magic tricks and riding a unicycle.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Ann Hamilton; three sons, Mark, Michael and Timothy; and three daughters, Judy Priore, Jill Drake and Susan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Newman Center at the University at Buffalo, 495 Skinnersville Road, Amherst.
