TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The Buffalo Sabres’ reign as champions of the Prospects Tournament came to an end in Monday’s tournament final against the host Detroit Red Wings.
Anthony Mantha scored twice on the power play to stake Detroit to a two-goal lead and then assisted on what proved to be the game-winning goal midway through the third period during the Red Wings’ 4-2 win.
The loss means the Sabres finished the tournament 3-1 overall.
Buffalo, which won the event the last time it was held in 2011, received third-period goals from Frederick Roy and Peter Trainor. But Tomas Jurco’s empty-netter with 26 seconds left foiled the Sabres’ comeback hopes. Zach Nastasiuk also scored for Detroit.
Nathan Lieuwen finished with 36 saves for Buffalo, which was outshot 40-25.
The Sabres entered the final having scored 16 goals in their first three games, while the Red Wings came in having yielded only four over that same stretch.
