High school football Week One: Today’s games, what’s on the web and a look ahead

What to watch today

Class B South

Springville Griffins at Eden Raiders, 2 p.m.

The last time this Southtowns showdown was played was in last year’s quarterfinals, Springville won at Eden, knocking off a Raiders team that had finished first in Class B South. It was part of Springville’s storybook postseason in which the Griffins went on to win again to reach the Class B championship game at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Other key games today:

• Cardinal O’Hara at Nichols, noon — the day’s first kickoff.

• Hutch-Tech vs. South Park at All High Stadium, 1 p.m. — Tyler Mascio’s first game quarterbacking the Sparks.

• St. Anthony’s (L.I.) at St. Joe’s, 2 p.m. — Marauders’ first test is a tough one against downstate power.

• Starpoint at Lockport, 2 p.m. — Great annual meeting between Niagara County rivals. Starpoint hasn’t beaten the Lions since 2008.

• Maryvale at Cleveland Hill, 2 p.m. — Cheektowaga rivals meet with the visiting Flyers trying to knock off the defending Section VI Class C champs.

• Kickoff Classic at Syracuse’s Carrier Dome — Three teams will play Section III (Syracuse area) opponents: Pioneer vs. Oneida, 11 a.m.; West Seneca East vs. Central Square, 4 p.m.; Cheektowaga vs. Jamesville-Dewitt (No. 13 in final Class A state rankings last year), 6:30 p.m.

• Depew at Olean, 7:30 p.m. — Powerful Wildcats program heads down to Olean in Western New York’s latest-scheduled season opener.

[BN] the know every week during the high school football season with PrepTalkTV’s live, half-hour show each Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Keith McShea will bring you interviews, analysis and features that you can find only at buffalonews.com.

This year, high school students have a chance to be part of PrepTalkTV.

If you’d like to co-host PrepTalkTV with McShea, make a one-minute video online in which you “broadcast” your reasons for wanting to be part of the show. We’re looking for enthusiasm and the ability to speak into a camera. Then share the link of your video with @KeithMcSheaBN via Twitter, or email the link to kmcshea@buffnews.com.

We’re hoping to pick a winner from a different school each week. The earlier you make a video, the better chance you have of being on the show. High school journalism teachers and advisors are welcome to nominate students as well.

Live chat Thursday

Stay tuned after PrepTalkTV for another weekly feature, a live chat with McShea at 9 p.m. Anything regarding Western New York high school sports, or The News’ coverage of it, is up for discussion.

Getting ready for Week Two

A quick look ahead at next weekend’s top games:

• The week gets started a day early with two Thursday games in the Northtowns: Williamsville East at Amherst kicks off at 6 while Williamsville North is at Williamsville South at 7.

• Next Friday, Tonawanda plays its first home game at the new Clint Small Stadium, which is on the grounds of the high school, when it hosts Class C North newcomer and longtime power Lackawanna at 7.

• Two major matchups next Friday are Lockport at Orchard Park at 7 (Lockport played OP pretty tough in a pair of competitive games last season) while Canisius heads to Rochester for the second straight week when they take on longtime power and defending Section V Class AA champion Aquinas.

• Next Saturday features a marquee matchup between Section VI and the Monsignor Martin Association, and it will be under the lights: St. Joe’s plays at Clarence at 7 p.m.
