Amherst man killed in Pennsylvania crash on I-79

An Amherst man was among three people killed Friday afternoon in a head-on collision on Interstate 79 in Mercer County, Pa.

Robert J. Neubert II, 62, of Amherst reportedly lost control of his southbound car around 5:43 p.m. in Deer Creek Township, according to Pennsylvania state police, and for reasons unknown crossed into oncoming traffic. His car struck another car driving in the northbound lane. The northbound car flipped over the guard rail and landed on its side, according to the Associated Press.

Susan L. Thomas, 54, of Sewickley, Pa., driver of the northbound car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, Mary Carmody, 44, also of Sewickley, was also killed.

Neubert died during the ambulance drive to the hospital, police said.

Mercer County is about halfway between Erie, Pa., and Pittsburgh.
