The southbound South Grand Island Bridge will be closed from 11 p.m. tonight through 9 a.m. Sunday for construction work, the New York State Thruway Authority announced.

Motorists traveling southbound will be diverted to a single lane on the northbound South Grand Island Bridge while contractors complete a polyester concrete overlay on the bridge deck.

The weekend closure will allow the contractor to fill bridge joints in one continuous process, according to the Thruway Authority. This method limits the number of additional lane closures needed and provides a smoother riding surface, the agency said.
