Amherst cops nab would-be robber

A would-be robber was arrested in Williamsville Wednesday night after a run-in with Town of Amherst police officers during which he reportedly brandished a metal stapler as a weapon.

Jason Wightman, 34, of Williamsville was charged with attempted robbery, burglary, and obstruction for trying – and failing – to steal cash from a Williamsville gas station while the station attendant barricaded himself in an office, Amherst police reported.

Wightman was gone by the time police officers responding to a 911 call arrived on the scene, but plainclothes officers who remained in the area encountered him a short time later.

When confronted by police, Wightman refused to comply with verbal commands and instead brandished a “silver-colored object” at the officers. He eventually became compliant when police reinforcements arrived.

The object, police said, turned out to be a stapler.

Wightman was remanded to the Erie County Holding Center in lieu of $25,000 bail.
