OLEAN – Yearning for ribs, wine, beer and a bit of culture to wash it down?
Then Swine, Wine & Crafts, an event sponsored by the United Way of Cattaraugus County, is right up your alley.
The festival, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at War Vets Park, is a contest of culinary skills, luring masters of rib cookery as well as custom brewers. The blues are also on the menu, with an appearance of the Mojo Hand Blues Band.
Two crowns are at stake, according to Candace Plants, executive director of the United Way.
“Last year’s best ribs (went to) Shawn Anastasia, and The Notorious P.I.G. was crowned to be the people’s choice,” Plants said. “Anastasia is riding a two-year winning streak, so that makes him the guy to beat.”
Contestants cook a minimum of 30 pounds of pork ribs, and the winner walks away with a $1,200 Traeger smoker, donated by local country music station WPIG. The People’s Choice Award winner gets a new grill, as well. Both also receive a cast-iron pig trophy.
“We are going to order 600 pounds of ribs, and we are hoping for 20 teams to cook,” Plants added. “If we do not get that many, each competitor will get more.” The ribs are double the amount that was cooked last year.
Despite inclement weather last year, the United Way made a $4,000 profit from the event.
Event-goers will decide the People’s Choice winner. Judges from Good Times of Olean, Attard’s and DJ Butchello get to pick the best ribs.
