Where We Live: Cheektowaga


A German-language Catholic Mass at 10:30 a.m. today, presented by Canisius College, kicks off the second day of the Western New York German-American Heritage Festival in Cheektowaga Town Park on Harlem Road.

Gates officially open at noon, as does the Marktplatz vendor and heritage midway. The Weinstube (wine garden) and Grimm’s Fairytale Kinder Park open at 1 p.m.

Today’s events include a yodeling contest at 3 p.m. and a sauerkraut eating contest at 5:30. The German-American of the Year presentation is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Admission is $6 per person. There’s no charge for children 12 and younger. Visit www.BuffaloGerman.com, then click on WNY German American Heritage Festival to download a voucher for $4 admission.

Also this week:

• The Cheektowaga Town Board meets at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in Council Chambers at Town Hall, 3301 Broadway.

• A regular meeting of the Cheektowaga Central School Board begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the board room at the high school, 3600 Union Road.

• The Cleveland Hill School Board meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the community room at 105 Mapleview Road.

• Proposals to buy recycling totes and to convert property assessments to full market value will be discussed in a series of six public meetings during September and October. The first begins at 6 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria of Maryvale Primary School, One Nagel Drive.
