Bona tops Niagara in soccer; UB nets tie with Vermont

Kolby Banker, Steve Carcaterro and Emmitt O’Connor scored for St. Bonaventure (2-0) in a 3-1 men’s soccer victory over Niagara (0-2) Sunday at Niagara Field in Lewiston. Nicholas Watson had the lone Niagara goal in the 85th minute with a through ball from Julian Ekeze.

After Watson’s goal made it 3-1, The Bonnies defense in front of goalkeeper Jeremy Figler kept Niagara off the board, earning Figler his second win on this young season.

“Figler has been a great addition to the team,” said Bona Coach Mel Mahler. Figler recorded seven saves on 16 shots he faced.

“Today as we did Friday against UB we worked hard to score early with the goal to set the tempo of the match. We’re creating chances and finishing them” Mahler added.

The Bonnies have scored three goals in two consecutive games for the first time since 2006.
