DUNKIRK – Finance committee members are hoping a private buyer can be found for a piece of harbor front property.

Mayor A.J. Dolce told the group on Thursday that a $50,000 mortgage payment is due on the former Bertges property on Route 5. He said that while the property is owned by the Dunkirk Local Development Corporation, (DLDC), they will need a loan from the city of about $20,000 to make the September payment.

Committee members lacked a quorum for the committee session. But it was agreed that the funds would need to be transferred from the city funds to the development corporation to make the payment.

The property, a former vehicle repair and sales business, is currently being cleaned by the Department of Environmental Conservation. Mayor Dolce said there will be a fee associated with that cleanup.

“We need to start looking for a private buyer soon,” said Councilwoman Stacy Szukala.
