The principal of a local Christian school has been awarded a $2,000 grant to help fund a middle school campus radio station.

Mike Ward, of New Creation Fellowship Academy on Genesee Street, was announced last week as one of 100 recipients nationwide of an ING Unsung Heroes grant; almost 1,300 applications were submitted. Ward now will compete with other winners for prizes of an additional $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000.

Ward’s idea, “Countdown,” is an AM radio station that will broadcast periodically during the day, within a two- to three-mile radius of the school. Students will be responsible for the broadcast, with help from a local commercial radio station.

Grant money will be used to buy the necessary equipment, Ward said. The plan is to have the station up and running by October or November.

For the past 17 years, the ING Unsung Heroes program honors educators who work to make a lifelong impact in the classroom for their students. The program is funded by a financial services company.
