Letter: Tea party leading us down the wrong path

Tea party leading us down the wrong path

A recent letter erroneously showered liberal government with responsibility for all of the country’s ills. It would be futile to respond to each charge. Suffice it to say that the old adage “none so blind as those who refuse to see” applies.

Our esteemed congressmen and women are taking off five weeks while their desks in Washington are piled high with crucial legislation that cries out for immediate action. Their energies, aside from raising funds, have been dedicated to 40 bills to repeal the Affordable Care Act. What a sterling accomplishment! What is it with the ultra-conservatives? Every action they take seems calculated to make the lives of the 97 percent more difficult.

Now we are preparing for a showdown on the debt ceiling. The neo-cons and the tea party are apparently willing to see us default on our debts if they don’t get their own way. This is a perfect example of nihilism; a desire to destroy or shut down government. We elect them to make our country a better place and they are doing just the opposite. They continue to do as they darn well please. They are making fools of us.

We look across the world and see corruption and are dismayed, and yet here we have our representatives taking money for votes that benefit their donors and ensure a steady flow into their own pockets.

My voice cannot reach across to all the states, but here in Western New York, we can do our part. Those of you who vote in staunchly Republican districts can do a great service by not returning Rep. Chris Collins to office. He is in lockstep with the tea party, bent on tearing down. His career as county executive was a disaster. He should be returned to private life.
