Andrew Herbert, who will be a senior at Eden High, bowled a 300 game in leading the men’s scratch’s division qualifying, but losing to Matt Ciminelli, 245-216 in the match-play final of the Greater Buffalo USBC Associaton Annual Kick-Off Tournament at Airport Lanes Thursday night.
Herbert, the Section VI individual champion who will be in the No. 1 position in the finals of the Teen Masters national tournament in New York City in October, led the qualifier with a 656 then topped Andy Rettig, 234-150, and Geno Walh, 225-181, before meeting Ciminelli.
Kristy Thompson of Lancaster defeated Sue Nawojski, 248-202 for the scratch women’s title.
Marla Berry of North Tonawanda took the handicap title with a 220-201 win over Don Nichols.
Ciminelli topped Joe DiNardo (196-150) and Jeff Walsh (268-170) en route to the title match.
Thompson, who led the two-game qualifying round with 487, triumphed over Debra Ervin by striking in a one-pin roll off after they tied at 205, then topped Danielle Dolegala (177-166) on her way to the finals.
Berry, a 123-average bowler who was the top handicap qualifier, advanced to the final with wins over John Berry (196-184) and Jim Tatar (226-225).
