Nielsen claims 10th WNYPGA Section championship

No golfer has won more Western New York Section PGA championships than Lonnie Nielsen.

Tuesday, the 60-year-old pro from Orchard Park shot the day’s best score, 2-under-par 70, to win his 10th Coors WNYPGA Section championship at Hickory Stick Resort in Lewiston. The win was worth $2,300.

Nielsen, who was tied for seventh after shooting 75 in the first round on Monday, finished with a 1-over 145, two strokes better than Tim Fries (Transit Valley) and Jeff Kaye (Livingston CC). Kirk Stauffer (Pine Acres, Bradford, Pa.) and Alex Weir (Kahkwa Club, Erie, Pa.) tied for fourth at 148.

Fries, Kaye and Stauffer each shot a 75 in the final round. Weir had a 71.

Nielsen, former pro at Crag Burn CC, a lifetime PGA Member and a member of the WNY PGA Hall of Fame, has won 20 section titles in all, 10 in medal play and 10 when the section held match-play championships. The Iowa native is taking time off this season from the Champions Tour, where he has been a two-time winner, due to a knee injury.

First-round leader Steve Parker (Wanakah) soared to an 85 Tuesday after shooting 4-under 68 on Monday.

It was the 28th annual WNYPGA championship tournament, but the first time it was held at Hickory Stick, a 7,026 layout in just its third year of existence.

In Lyons, Kathy Hunt (Brookfield) was in fifth place, eight strokes off the lead after shooting 81 in the first round of the New York State Women’s Senior Amateur at Wayne Hills CC. Donna Parker (Orchard Park) was alone in 12th after an 83. Susan Kahler (Ballston Spa CC) is the first-round leader with 3-over 76.

Among the Super Seniors, Sharon Johnson (Fox Valley) led the WNY contingent with a 93, good for a tie for 10th place.
