Dunkirk cancels Heritage Festival

DUNKIRK – Mayor A. J. Dolce announced that the Dunkirk Heritage Festival, scheduled for Sept. 6 and 7, has been canceled.

Dolce made the announcement Tuesday, during the regular meeting of the City Council in city hall.

He said the event did not have a major sponsor and he had a concern about costs for the event. Also, The Dunkirk Historical Society will host its historic homes tour that weekend. The tour is a fundraiser for the society and local museum.

In other matters, the DK Bandits Motorcycle Club was asked to change its venue for a distribution of school supplies.They asked to use Washington Park. Police Chief David Ortolano said he was not inclined to have the group in a city park because there have been several nuisance complaints about the members. Members of the group agreed to distribute the school supplies from their clubhouse.

A request from Holly Loft Ski & Bike Sales to use Washington Park for a display of bikes and demonstration was denied. The vote was 4 to 1 with Councilman Mike Michalski voting in favor of the request. Other Council members said they were not in favor of approving a request from a private business.

Robert Wright of the New York State Office of Taxation gave a presentation on the STAR program. He said all residents who have received a STAR exemption on their taxes in the past will be required to reapply. He said the new application process is a result of an audit that found several taxpayers receiving multiple STAR reductions. The reduction only applies to one primary residence in New York State.

Police will participate in a federal program to identify convicted sex offenders. Council members authorized participation in the database program and approval to accept reimbursement for participation in the program.

Two additional concerts will be held this summer due to rain cancellations. Concerts will be held on Sept. 5 and 12 on the city pier.
