Woman under investigation after Orleans County crash

CARLTON – A 47-year-old Carlton woman was injured and trapped in her battered car for more than an hour after the vehicle jumped over a guard rail and rolled 100 feet down an embankment, Orleans County sheriff’s deputies said.

Sandra M. Flanagan was extricated from the car by Carlton and Albion volunteer firefighters and treated for injuries at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, police said.

Flanagan lost control of her car on a curve on Oak Orchard River Road about 9:30 p.m. on Friday, accident investigator K.J. Colonna reported.

“While the incident remains under investigation, it appears that both alcohol and unsafe speed were contributing factors,” police said in a report issued late Saturday night. “Charges against Flanagan are pending her recovery.”

After Flanagan was extricated from her car about 100 feet down a steep embankment, rope rescue teams from the Clarendon and Holley volunteer units brought her up the embankment to a waiting Mercy Flight helicopter.

She was released from Strong Memorial after treatment for her injuries, a hospital official said this morning.
