Samantha Kerr and Abby Wambach scored goals within a five-minute span in the first half and the Western New York Flash went on to a 2-1 victory over the Boston Breakers Saturday night in their regular season finale at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester.
It was the first win over the Breakers after a loss and two ties against the Boston team this season. The outcome clinched at least second place in the National Women’s Soccer League for the Flash (10-4-8) and all but assured them of a first-round home game in the playoffs.
Kerr scored her eighth goal of the season in the 23rd minute, driving her shot over the head of goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. Wambach assisted on the goal.
Wambach scored on a header, her 11th of the season, in the 28th minute after a free kick by Brittany Taylor.
Boston scored in the 55th minute when Rhiana Wilkinson tallied with a ball that deflected off Angela Salem of the Flash. The play originated with a corner kick by the Breakers.
Wilkinson’s goal was the first the Flash allowed at home since June 23. The Flash registered five straight shutouts at home since then. WNY finished with a 8-1-2 record in Rochester, with the loss coming to Boston, 2-1, on April 27.
