Raids on 3 delis net Buffalo police guns, ammunition, cigarettes

Guns, untaxed cigarettes and ammunition were among the items seized this week by Buffalo police following a sting of three corner delicatessens that originated with information obtained by the department’s Intelligence Unit, according to police officials.

The biggest haul came following a Buffalo SWAT raid at Shop N Go, 984 Jefferson Ave., at East North Street.

There, police seized a loaded 9mm handgun from an ATM machine inside the store, 56 cartons of contraband cigarettes along with 27 loose packs, more than three dozen boxes of various brands of cigars as well as 9mm, .38-caliber rounds and those for an AK-47 and 12-gauge shotgun from the address, according to police inventory reports.

Arrested in connection with that raid were Abdulkarim A. Naser, 23, and Saad Ahmed Naser, 20. Both were charged with felony and misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon as well as attempts to evade state tobacco tax and possession or transfer of unstamped cigarettes.

“The investigation was initiated by the Intelligence Unit by developing information from its sources,” said Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda. “In this case, they had some information on guns that were illegal.”

He added: “It’s good police work.”

Meanwhile, police also reported confiscating three handguns, including a .50-caliber gold-plated gun along with .40-caliber and 9mm handguns and $53,000 in U.S. currency in a separate raid at the Nashwan Mini Mart at 173 E. Ferry St. Police also seized an SKS semiautomatic carbine with eight rounds and a stun gun in another raid at a 177 French St. store at the corner of Kehr Street.

Details involving suspects or charges in both of those raids were not immediately available.
