‘An Evening With Todd Rundgren’ takes over Canalside tonight

Todd Rundgren has been creating restlessly brilliant art at a breathless pace since the late 1960s. Because of his mercurial artistic temperament, refusal to be typecast or reduced to a single idiom, and inability to sit still for too long, Rundgren has been largely denied the massive pop stardom that many felt was his due around the time of the release of the watershed early ’70s double album “Something/Anything?” None of this seemed to have bothered Rundgren too much – in the time since “Hello It’s Me” became a smash, he’s created music in the power-pop, prog-rock, new wave, electronica, bossa nova, R&B, soul, hard rock and hip-hop genres. About the only thing Rundgren hasn’t done is release a country album.

Rundgren’s latest effort, “State,” combines many of the idioms mentioned above in a single long-player. But when “Runt” and his band take the stage today as part of the Thursday at Canalside series, you won’t be hearing much, if anything, from that latest release. Instead, expect a 20-plus song stroll through a catalog of music that is nigh on unrivalled in popular music.

Showtime is 5 p.m. today. Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds plus This is Fiction open. Admission is free.
