Wooly Bear Weekend puts spotlight on Cattaraugus County offerings

LITTLE VALLEY – For years, advertisements and commercials have been telling consumers to “buy American” or, “Look for the union label.”

A new promotion under way will tell consumers what Cattaraugus County has to offer.

WILMA the Wooly Bear Weekend, sponsored by the Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism, is designed to put a spotlight on the county’s manufacturers and its artists.

WILMA (We Invite Local Manufacturing & Artisans) will be held in the Corporate Building of the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds, Little Valley, from Oct. 18 to 20.

“The family-oriented, expo event is scheduled to include items handmade or manufactured in Cattaraugus County by our local artisans and manufacturers,” said Lenora Leasure, of the Economic Development, Planning and Tourism department.

“The event is intended to showcase all the items actually made here in the county and to promote buying local, just in time for the holiday shopping season,” she added.

Special activities also are being planned for children during the indoor event, which will get under way on Oct. 18 with a symposium on local manufacturing and arts.

The main events begin Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Events on Oct. 20 are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Available vendor tables will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is required by Sept. 15.
