A man who tried to stop another man who was chasing a woman on the Ellicott Creek bike path in Amherst was assaulted Wednesday morning, according to Amherst police.

The victim saw a woman run past him looking scared and possibly crying, authorities said, and a man running after her appeared to be chasing her. The victim tried to intervene, and the man assaulted him with a wooden club, causing injuries to the victim’s face, chest and arms, officials said.

The attacker then fled and the victim called Amherst police, who searched the area with University at Buffalo police but failed to find the woman or the attacker, officials said.

The attacker is described as a white male, 6-foot-3 or 6-foot-4, about 250 pounds, with a muscular build and short brown hair, police said. He was wearing sunglasses, a white T-shirt with a design or discoloration on the front, faded blue jeans, white shoes and a bracelet made of beads,authorities said.
