ECHL team signs ex-NU hockey players

Former Niagara University hockey players Dan Weiss and C.J. Chartrain signed a professional contract with the Toledo Walleye, the East Coast Hockey League team announced Wednesday. The Walleye are a minor league affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League.

“I am so proud of both Dan and C.J. for all that they did to make Niagara hockey a better program,” head coach Dave Burkholder said. “Toledo is one of hockey’s best minor professional franchises when you look at ownership, facilities and coaching. What an exciting time for both players and their families.”

Weiss was Niagara co-captain as a senior. The 6-foot-2 defenseman played in 36 games and was a second team All Atlantic Hockey Association choice. He had three goals and nine assists on the season. For his career he had 32 points in 125 games (7 goals, 25 assists).

Chartrain played in 139 games in four seasons and accounted for 12 goals and 39 assists. The defenseman finished his senior campaign with a pair of goals and 11 assists in 37 games.

Weiss and Chartrain are the fifth and sixth Purple Eagles to join the professional ranks since the conclusion of the 2012-13 season.
