Where We Live: Grand Island

Grand Island

New York State is slowly working to upgrade the golf patron area of Beaver Island State Park, making plans to build a new pro shop to replace one destroyed by fire last year.

The revitalization plans are part of a $2.6 million NY Works project to improve State Park golf courses. The state has also launched an “I Love NY Golf” campaign meant to create jobs and increase tourism.

Few details about the project were available, since it is still in the conceptual phase. But the state plans to build a new pro shop, add a cafe, improve the course’s irrigation system and overhaul landscaping around the patron area.

The state recently extended deadlines until August 23 for two calls for proposals involving catering and golf operations at Beaver Island. The state is looking for someone to run catering, food and beverage operations at Beaver Island Clubhouse and the snack bar at the beach as well as someone to run the 18-hole golf course, pro shop and the golf course’s restaurant.

Since the fire, Beaver Island has been running golf cart rentals and other activities out of the park’s restaurant.
