Where We Live: Cheektowaga

Being ready for storms in the town means more than having fresh batteries for flashlights and portable radios, and a stash of non-perishable foods.

At last Monday’s Town Board meeting, the town was recognized by the National Weather Service in Buffalo for maintaining its StormReady status; the town first was recognized in 2007 and each renewal is in effect for three years.

To be recognized as StormReady under the nationwide voluntary program, which involves a partnership between local National Weather Service forecast offices and state and local emergency managers, a community must:

• Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center;

• Have more than one way to receive severe weather forecasts and warnings and to alert the public;

• Create a system that monitors local weather conditions;

• Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars; and

• Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises.

“In our town, every department contributed to this StormReady application,” said Earl Loder, the town’s emergency services manager.

Dozens of members of the Community Emergency Response Team [CERT], several of whom were present Monday, have completed the three-hour training program, which is held twice a year.
