Four local crews to row in finals at Royal Canadian Henley Regatta

Four Buffalo boats — two from the West Side Rowing Club and two representing the Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Association — will row in finals today of the 131th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catharines, Ont.

Andrew Carmody and William Downing of the WSRC will row in the final of the Under 23 Lightweight Men’s Pair after their second-place finish in a qualifying heat on Friday. WSRC was second, 1:53 seconds behind the Botafogo crew of Rio de Janeiro.

The other West Side boat in the finals is the Under 23 Women’s Four of Kellie Solowski, Lily Keane, Emily Herzig and Corrine Kickel, which finished third in its heat on Saturday in 7:30.40. Penn A.C. Rowing Association won the heat in 7:25.840.

A Scholastic Rowing Association eight will row in the Under 19 Men’s final. The crew is comprised of Jacob Filby (coxswain), Ryan Flynn, Joseph Ebner, Brian Hamp, David Militello, Sean Overdorf, Connor Gilson, Max Paterson and Michael Battaglia.

Another Scholastic Rowing Association eight finished second in its heat on Saturday to qualify for today’s Senior Lightweight Men’s final. That boat consists of Ben Zabel (coxswain), Sam Hausmann, Dan Luongo, Michael Battaglia, Charlie Kwitchoff, Ryan Flynn, Joseph Ebner, Dylan Sabuda, and Owen Ogiony.

A mixed eight from West Side finished second Saturday in the Regatta Sport Dash for Cash. Christina Ross (coxswain), Ahmed Bahgad, Erik Schiferle, Brett Lawhon, John Paul Scaduto, Kellie Solowski, Emily Herzig, Corrine Kickel and Lily Keane were in the boat which finished 1.97 seconds behind the Riverside Boat Club (1:26.80) of Cambridge, Mass.

Friday, the West Side Under 23 Women’s Eight won a silver medal.
