Submission deadline at hand on plan to transfer students

Today is the deadline for the Buffalo Public Schools to submit a finalized school choice plan to the state Education Department.

The district had previously submitted a plan to allow any student attending an underperforming school to transfer to a school in good standing. However, the state rejected the original plan saying it was inadequate and lacked the specific details about how students would be accommodated.

William Keresztes, chief of student support services, stated that since the application window for transfers closed last week, he hoped to begin placing students immediately, but it would likely take at least through the start of the school year to place all students.

The ability to complete the placement process is dependent on the state approving the district’s revised school choice plan.

More than 2,000 students submitted transfer applications.
