Housing insecurity looms large among state’s seniors

More than 60 percent of New Yorkers 50 and older express worries about staying in their homes as they age, according to a survey released Tuesday by AARP.

Other findings of the mail survey of 5,000 residents include: 90 percent said it is mportant that home- and community-based services be available to them; 77 percent said the state should play a role in providing funds and services to help people stay in their homes or communities; and 56 percent indicated it was at least somewhat likely that they will need to provide unpaid care to an adult relative or friend.

The report coincides with efforts by AARP and other organizations to develop policy recommendations that will make caregiving a legislative priority.
