Center begins new training for prospective workers

BATAVIA – With a food processing business park flourishing in its early months, the Genesee County Economic Development Center has begun a second round of training for prospective workers.

The center, in cooperation with Genesee Community College, is accepting applications to prepare workers for jobs in Alpina Foods and Mueller Quaker, both churning out yogurt in the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park in the Town of Batavia.

The two firms, specializing in the growing popularity of high-protein Greek-style yogurt, employ about 250 workers.

Alpina is buying an additional 10 acres for an expansion of its production.

Applications are available at the county’s Career Center at 587 E. Main St.

Classes start Sept. 23 and will focus on food handling, dairy science and sanitation.

Twenty-four people completed the first training session, and nearly half of them have found jobs.
