Next weekend, for the second year in a row, a kind of Dog Olympics will go on for two days at Knox Farm State Park.

“It’s very entertaining, if you like dogs,” said Lynn Reece Broderick, organizer of the Dog Agility Trial. “There’s an agility course with jumps, tunnels ...”

“It’s all voice commands and body language,” she said. “It’s kind of a personal, ‘You and the dog against the course.’”

This year about 30 dogs have registered – from mixed breeds to Border Collies, a Shetland Sheepdog, a Briard, a Mastiff and even a ‘Goldendoodle,” golden retriever-poodle hybrid.

Events start at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, August 3 and 4, at the Chur Family Equestrian Center at the park on 363 Knox Road.

Broderick expected competitions to wrap up around 2 p.m.

Watching entrants win ribbons for their skill navigating the course might inspire other dogs and owners to get certified and enter next year’s competition,” said Broderick, who owns Pet Works Dog Training. “If you’ve got a dog who loves to work with you doing tricks, it’s a wonderful bonding experience.”

Dogs to watch next weekend: Sheamus, the dachshund. “He was a rescue dog,” she said. “He used to be a couch potato.”
