Similar incident sheds light on role reversal outcome

A recent letter to this page questioned whether the verdict would have been different had Trayvon Martin killed George Zimmerman. One only has to look as far as Greece, N.Y., in 2009 when neighborhood watchman Roderick Scott shot and killed unarmed teenager Christopher Cervini, whom he believed was engaged in criminal activity. He was subsequently acquitted of first-degree manslaughter. The only major differences being New York doesn’t have a “stand your ground” law, there was no physical confrontation between the two, there was barely any media attention, much less protests or comments from the president, and Scott was black while Cervini was white. I hope this answers the writer’s questions.
