Robert A. Mathisen, electrical engineer, businessman

Robert A. Mathisen, an electrical engineer and businessman who owned an electrical engineering consulting firm for 25 years and served in a variety of local industry leadership roles, died Tuesday in Kenmore Mercy Hospital, Town of Tonawanda, as a result of complications after surgery. He was 66.

Born in Buffalo, Mr. Mathisen was a graduate of the University at Buffalo, where he received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1968, and Rochester Institute of Technology, where he earned master’s degrees in both electrical engineering and business administration in 1978 and 1982, respectively.

After a post-college position with Sperry Rand took him as far afield as Europe, Mr. Mathisen returned to the Buffalo area, where he held a series of positions, including maintenance engineer with FMC Corp. in Middleport and consulting engineer with the Buffalo-based engineering firm Wilson, Klaes, Brucker and Worden, P.C.

In 1988, he founded his own electrical engineering consulting firm, RAM Consulting in Kenmore.

He was owner and principal of the firm, which serves various municipal and industrial clients in Western New York, Rochester and the Finger Lakes region.

A licensed professional engineer in New York and several other states, Mr. Mathisen was heavily involved in local industry groups throughout his career.

Chief among his leadership roles were chairman of the Buffalo chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and president of the Buffalo chapter of the International Society of Automation.

In 2001 and 2009, the Erie-Niagara Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers named Mr. Mathisen Engineering Educator of the Year.

He was also an active member of Church of the Nativity United Church of Christ.

Mr. Mathisen is survived by his wife of 18 years, Sandra, and a sister, Karen Calenzo.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Church of the Nativity, 1530 Colvin Blvd., Town of Tonawanda.
