Gomez powers Bisons to victory in Toledo

TOLEDO — Mauro Gomez drove in all four Buffalo runs Friday night. He also came a home run closer to setting the club’s single-season record.

With early offense from Gomez and a solid ninth from Neil Wagner, the Buffalo Bisons held on for a 4-2 win over the Toledo Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field.

It was the fourth straight win for the Bisons, who have won 10 of their last 16.

A two-out double from Gomez allowed Moises Sierra to score from first, giving the Bisons a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

In the third, Kevin Pillar and Anthony Gose had back-to-back singles. Both moved up on a wild pitch from Toledo starter Ramon Garcia.

Sierra struck out looking, but Gomez wstepped to the plate and drilled a 2-2 pitch over the center field fence, 406 feet away, for a two-out, three-run home run. It was the 28th home run of the season for Gomez, who continues to lead the International League in homers.

He continues to inch closer to the Bisons’ modern era record of 34 set by Alex Ramirez in 1998.

Chien-Ming Wang yielded no hits through 4∑ innings before Mike Cervenak singled in the fifth. He picked up the win, giving up two runs on four hits through seven innings.

The Mud Hens cut the lead to 4-2 on a one-out RBI double from Avisail Garcia and a two-out single from Nick Castellanos.

Toledo loaded the bases in the eighth but Buddy Carlyle got Danny Dorn to fly out to right in foul territory. Wagner picked up his 15th save giving up one hit with one strikeout in the ninth.

The series continues at 7 tonight (Radio 1520, 550 AM).

Lefty Ricky Romero (2-4, 6.00 ERA) is set to start for the Herd while Toledo counters with Shawn Hill (1-12, 5.80).

J.A. Happ is scheduled to make his second Major League rehabilitation start with the Bisons on Sunday.
