Student athlete denial is a shameful act by the state
I am writing in response to the front page story about David Gorczynski’s denial to run as a member of the Orchard Park High School cross country team his senior year due to an age restriction imposed by the state.
Everyone involved in making this determination should be embarrassed and ashamed. My children have run cross country for another local school district for many years and I have had the pleasure of seeing David run at many competitions. You not only deny David with this decision, you also deny all those who attend cross country competitions. He is nothing but an inspiration to everyone. It is uplifting watching his teammates and other school runners alike all gather to cheer David on to the finish line bringing a smile to everyone’s face.
Running at the junior varsity level, his finishing race time does not affect the team’s overall score either positively nor negatively. Because of his disability he is an ungraded student and attends high school until age 21. He should be allowed to run as a member of the cross country team while he remains a student at Orchard Park High School.
David should be granted a second waiver immediately, allowing him to begin training with his team.
