LOCKPORT – Sen. Charles E. Schumer will tour damage from Friday’s flooding in Lockport today.
Schumer will start his tour at 9:30 a.m. at the city wastewater treatment plant, which handled record volumes of water during Friday afternoon’s downpour that overwhelmed the city sewer system. Other stops will include a sinkhole on Gooding Street blamed on the rainstorm, and the Widewaters Drive-In, a Market Street restaurant that sustained an estimated $300,000 in damage. Scores of residents have discarded belongings ruined in flooded basements along curbs awaiting trash collection.
The total damage tab for Lockport has been estimated at $7 million. Schumer said in a news release that Niagara County needs to be added to a state request for disaster aid.
