Events at branches marking National Library Week

Author visits, book sales, movies, tours, special displays and crafts are among the events and free programs planned at the 37 branches of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library during National Library Week, which began Sunday. For a complete schedule, click on “Events This Month” at www.buffalolib.org.

A highlight will be the reading of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s April 16, 1963, “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by community leaders at 5:30 p.m. today in the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave. It will be part of a worldwide celebration of the letter’s 50th anniversary.

“Libraries are changing – they’re full of activity and excitement,” said Mary Jean Jakubowski, director of the library system. “I hope folks will discover or rediscover what libraries have to offer.”
