A story in Friday's Buffalo News reported that Vets for Freedom, a political committee affiliated with congressional candidate David Bellavia, raised $175,750 to help Republican congressional candidates in 2008. The Center for Responsive Politics said that money was spent by the Vets for Freedom "527" organization, a tax-exempt entity created to influence the fall election.
But another arm of Vets for Freedom -- a 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organization -- raised money to fund $6.3 million in media buys that year, according to the group's filing with the Internal Revenue Service for 2008. That document, which is not listed on the Center for Responsive Politics or Federal Election Commission websites, shows that Vets for Freedom raised $8.7 million in total that year.
