Clarence softball, track stars win titles

The Clarence softball team and several Section VI track and field athletes were crowned state champions on Saturday.

The Red Devils defeated Cicero-North Syracuse for the Class AA title, 3-1, Section VI's first softball state championship in six years.

The track and field champions list reads like a who's who in Section VI: Brandon Joyce of Niagara Falls, Wayne Gordon and Stephanie Izard of Sweet Home, Dominik Kosar of St. Joe's, Andrew Burgio of Depew, Kala Allen of Williamsville East and Christina Walter of Maple Grove.

Not everyone in Section VI experienced the thrill of victory.

In baseball, Grand Island's emotional ride through the postseason ended in defeat in the Class A state final, and Frewsburg and Pine Valley both fell in the semifinals.

In softball, Class A representative Hamburg and Class C Frewsburg were close to advancing to the finals but both hurt themselves with errors and left runners in scoring position in the final inning.
