Who?: Renowned alto/tenor saxophonist, composer, bandleader and (sometime) jazz journalist has just released a new album of his own compositions, "House of Relics." He is joined by some of the area's finest jazz musicians: trumpet/flugelhorn player Tim Clarke, pianist Michael McNeill, bassist Danny Ziemann, drummer Russ Alegra, and baritone saxophonist Bruce Johnstone.
Why?: Bucheger's compositions continuously astound in their inventiveness, and throughout "House of Relics," the interplay among the musicians is nigh-on-sublime. This is present-day jazz of the highest order.
What's next?: A CD release party is 8 p.m. Monday in Allen Street Hardware Cafe (245 Allen St.).
Check out: The CD can be purchased through CDBaby.com and KellyBucheger.Bandcamp.com. Information on Bucheger's substantial musical history, as well as his ongoing blog, can be found through his websites, HarderBop.com and Jazztenor.com. Bucheger also leads his band, What Would Mingus Do?, at 8 p.m. Mondays in Allen Street Hardware.
